More than 12,000 years ago glacial ice covered all of northern Wisconsin and a major part of central Wisconsin, yet the south-western part of the state was unglaciated or “driftless.” The Ice Age Trail follows the southern-most reach of the immense ice sheet before it retreated and carved and sculpted a distinctive look that separates the two parts of Wisconsin.
More than a million people have used the trail to hike, backpack, snowshoe, and enjoy “retreating” to nature. Penny and Dale were the 25th and 26th people to hike the entire route which starts at the Minnesota border, goes east to Antigo, south to Janesville and then back up north to the trail terminus at Potawatomi State Park in Door County.
Dale is a former school teacher and was the founder and first president of the Fox Cities chapter of the Sierra Club. Penny was a Physical Therapist and represented the Appleton area District in the State Legislature for two terms.
