Annual Social

What

The Annual Social provides a forum for you to socialize with like-minded individuals.  We will have various items available via silent auction prior to the meeting.

The annual meeting will be conducted during an optional family-style dinner.  The annual meeting will include a brief recap of the year’s accomplishments and an election of new board members.

Our Guest Speakers will be Dale and Penny Bernard Schaber from Appleton. They will share their experiences hiking the 1,000 mile Ice Age Trail through Wisconsin.  The Ice Age trail is one of only 11 trails in the U.S. to receive the National Scenic Designation from Congress because of its unique features and geological significance.

More than 12,000 years ago glacial ice covered all of northern Wisconsin and a major part of central Wisconsin, yet the south-western part of the state was unglaciated or “driftless.”  The Ice Age Trail follows the southern-most reach of the immense ice sheet before it retreated and carved and sculpted a distinctive look that separates the two parts of Wisconsin.

More than a million people have used the trail to hike, backpack, snowshoe, and enjoy “retreating” to nature.  Penny and Dale were the 25th and 26th people to hike the entire route which starts at the Minnesota border, goes east to Antigo, south to Janesville and then back up north to the trail terminus at Potawatomi State Park in Door County.

Dale is a former school teacher and was the founder and first president of the Fox Cities chapter of the Sierra Club.  Penny was a Physical Therapist and represented the Appleton area District in the State Legislature for two terms.
